It was another warm late-April morning at the home of the BayCity Strollers as BayCity welcomed Woodchurch for this walking football league fixture. Conditions were ideal, with the sun already making its presence felt ahead of the 11am kick-off.
BayCity named a well-balanced side despite a few absences, with Dom in goal behind Kingy, who marshalled the defence superbly, making a number of timely tackles and looking to build attacks from the back. Dave operated in a false nine role, linking play effectively, while Phil took up an advanced midfield position. Grant stepped in from the over-60s squad and played a key role in central midfield, with Darren and Nick W providing width and energy on either side. Nick H, Les and Tooney were available from the bench.
The game began evenly, with both sides feeling each other out in the opening exchanges. However, BayCity soon began to assert control, with Grant, Dave and Phil finding space in central areas and combining well to open up the Woodchurch defence. Darren and Nick W stretched the play effectively, pulling the opposition wide and creating gaps through the middle, while Kingy provided a calm presence at the back, stepping in with well-timed interventions and initiating attacks.
The breakthrough came around five minutes in. A well-worked move through the middle saw Phil receive the ball in space, where he showed great composure to turn his marker and then beat a second defender. From a central position just outside the goalkeeper’s area, he finished coolly to give BayCity a deserved early lead.
With their tails up, BayCity continued to press for a second. Grant, Dave and Phil combined well again to create openings, probing for gaps in a well-organised Woodchurch side. Despite BayCity’s control, Woodchurch remained disciplined, tracking runners and limiting clear-cut chances.
Both sides then began to cancel each other out, with half-chances at either end and defences on top for long periods. When Woodchurch did break through, Dom was equal to it, making a number of routine saves, while Kingy continued to lead from the back with some crucial, timely tackles to keep danger at bay.
However, midway through the first half, Woodchurch found their equaliser. With bodies crowding the area, Dom’s view was partially unsighted as the shot came in, and a well-struck effort from a central position crept just inside the post to level the scores.
The remainder of the half was evenly contested, with neither side able to gain a clear advantage, and the teams went into the break with the game finely balanced.
Following a positive team talk from captain Dave Beale at the interval—echoing the same upbeat message as the previous week—BayCity returned to the pitch with renewed purpose, knowing the game was there for the taking.
The second half began much like the first, with both sides organised and competitive, cancelling each other out and creating only half-chances. Woodchurch applied pressure through central areas, winning a series of contentious free kicks in quick succession just outside the BayCity area. However, the defence stood firm, repelling the danger, and when required, Dom was again equal to it, producing another assured goalkeeping display.
As the game opened up, BayCity regained the initiative and retook the lead in impressive fashion. With Phil seemingly trapped on the right-hand side by a cluster of Woodchurch players, he showed great awareness to respond to Darren’s call from the opposite flank. Spotting the switch, Phil found the pass out of pressure, and Darren finished crisply with his left foot into the bottom corner to make it 2–1.
BayCity now began to dominate, and the pressure soon told. A few minutes later, with Woodchurch struggling to contain the movement of Dave and Phil, a free kick was awarded in a dangerous position. Phil rolled the ball into Dave’s path, who struck a superb effort that clipped the inside of the post with the goalkeeper stranded, extending the lead to 3–1.
Running offences had been kept to a minimum throughout, until Darren picked up his customary infringement midway through the half. Woodchurch began to push forward, and a poor foul on Nick W disrupted BayCity’s shape at a key moment. Having marshalled the right-hand side admirably, Nick W was forced off, with Les coming on in his place.
Woodchurch thought they had pulled a goal back during this period, but their celebrations were cut short as the effort was ruled out—despite strong protests from their goalkeeper, which nearly saw Dave reaching for his “handbag” in response.
However, the pressure eventually told. With Les still adjusting to the pace of the game, a series of three running infringements led to a penalty for Woodchurch, which they converted to bring the score back to 3–2 and set up a tense finish.
BayCity held their nerve in the closing stages, with Nick H introduced to help see the game out. The Strollers defended resolutely and managed the final minutes well to secure a deserved victory.
The result also provided a measure of revenge for the earlier 4–3 defeat in the reverse fixture, capping a strong all-round team performance.
