Over 50 and love football? Want to get fit again, meet people and have fun?? Come and join in!
The BayCity Strollers Walking Football Club aims to give adults aged 50+ the chance to keep / get fit again by taking part in a gentler form of the sport they love – football. It also aims to give members the opportunity to meet a very varied range of people in both a sporting and a social context. Above all, it’s a chance to have a bit of fun! We meet every Monday evening for a warm-up, training session and informal game on the Astroturf pitch at BayPoint Sports Club near Sandwich. The rules of the game are simple: walk (don’t run!), ball below head height, no slide tackling, minimum contact. The whole thing is designed to allow us to play real football, but without the injuries! The club started in October 2014 as one of the first in Kent, with half a dozen members and an enthusiastic, fully-qualified coach. We now have well over 30 members with new ones starting regularly.
We play for fun, but the club also arranges friendly matches against other WF teams and takes part in tournaments. As a result of winning the Kent tournament held at BayPoint in April 2015, the club’s first team qualified to represent Kent at the regional South East tournament held at Croydon in September 2015, when we finished as runners-up. BCS was instrumental in setting up the new Kent Walking Football League in 2015-16, left the league in November 2016 to concentrate on friendly matches and tournaments, then rejoined from October 2017. The club has a strong social commitment, arranging meetings, quiz evenings and buffet evenings at BayPoint. We are all convinced that Walking Football is an important step forward for members of our community aged 50+, and BayCity Strollers have done a huge amount to help bring this about.
Come along and have a look!
