This was BayCity’s first match of only their second season in the WFLA league.

Having played our opponents in some recent pre season friendlies, BayCity came out strong and straight away piled on the pressure which saw Paul, Jason and Phil all coming close to scoring in the first five minutes with BayCity playing some great set pieces which had our opponents pinned back in their own half for almost ten minutes.

Finally, another great set piece by BayCity saw Scott firing the ball into the roof of the net, giving BayCity a well-deserved goal. BayCity continued their dominance and it wasn’t long before Scott put them two nil up from a defensive error by the opposition keeper and defender.

BayCity were now firing on all cylinders and no sooner had our opponents restarted BayCity won possession of the ball and with some great one touch football, enabled Phil to take on two defenders with some class moves and shoot past the keeper to make it three nil to the home side.

Half time, three nil to BayCity.

The second half saw our opponents come out a bit stronger from the first half as they showed that they weren’t going to lay down and managed to put some good moves together but faltered at the final hurdle.

Soon enough, BayCity thought they were four nil up after another great move and finish by Paul but the ref cancelled out the goal for a close running call.  With ten minutes into the second half BayCity made two subs bringing Michael and Ian on for Paul and Phil who had both done their bit for the team.

With the subs made Scott sealed his hattrick from a through ball that enabled him to wiggle his way around the opponent’s defence and tuck the ball past the keeper.  Within seconds of the restart BayCity regained possession and a nice move from Michael and Ian left Dave to fire in one of his long-range shots that always seem to leave keepers standing.

With BayCity five nil up it was Scott once again firing in his fourth from a long range shot that left their keeper with no chance of saving.

Ethelbert were then awarded a penalty for a fourth running offence by BayCity which they converted for a consolation goal.  With minutes to go Darren rolled the ball out to Dave who fed the ball through their defence to Michael who was able to tuck the ball past their keeper.

With two minutes to go BayCity were awarded a penalty for Ethelbert’s fourth running offence and it was down to Danny to take the penalty kick. Unfortunately for him the Ethelbert’s keeper read the direction of the ball and made the save.

Fanal score 7 – 1 to BayCity and all credit to Ethelbert who were resilient throughout the game despite the final score line.

A great result for BayCity’s start to the league season which showed plenty of promising things to come.

Thanks to Chris Smith for refereeing as always.
