So our first match of the new season could not have gone any worse. We conceded really quickly to a speculative well struck effort. Undeterred we gradually got ourselves together and pressed our opponents back, unfortunately we were to go two behind as a rebound was tucked away. We stuck at it though and we were duly rewarded as Rob got us back in the game with a trademark finish. Momentum was gathering as the first half came to a close and we had the perfect opportunity to level as a fourth running offence meant we had a penalty. Alas we didn’t take advantage as the spot kick went wide, even without this we should have been level with the number of chances made and the pressure exerted.

A couple of half time changes and a good evaluation of the first half by Gordon meant we went out for the second half determined to put things right. It seemed however that our opponents brought with them the perfect storm, we quickly had a two goal deficit again as another long shot picked up a wicked deflection giving Lawrence no chance. We soon after scored our second as Micky finished with aplomb, all to play for and we battered them and it seemed only time before we levelled. The opposing keeper hadn’t read the script and some  excellent saves kept us out, if we were to beat him it was only because we were wide of the mark. As we chased the game we were to be caught out by two expertly taken goals as well as a penalty.

Our first league defeat since 13 August 2023 and as the score line suggests we were well beaten by a side that defended well and took pretty much every chance that they were given. Not the best start, most of us left the pitch wondering what the # happened there. If we didn’t know before then we know now! We must and can be so much better.

Thanks to Chris Smith for refereeing the game and to Ethelbert who played in the right spirit.
