3/5/2018: Review of Kent League season 2017/18

BayCity Strollers’ members had previously voted to withdraw from the Kent League, mainly as a result of concerns over the spirit in which league games had been played.  However, at the beginning of the 2017/18 season, it was agreed that if enough members wished to rejoin the league this season, we would be prepared to submit a team.  Around 15 players expressed an interest in playing league games again, so a team was entered in the league.

Since the start of the season, we have played 10, won 3, drawn 1, and lost 6.  However, aside from the first match against Herne Bay, we don’t seem to have been totally outplayed by any other teams.  Undoubtedly, standards have improved in other teams since we last entered the league.

The Herne Bay side, the worthy league winners, consists wholly of ex-semi professionals, so it is no discredit to lose against such players.

I think though that everyone has enjoyed playing the games, and pitting our skills(?) against players we do not otherwise meet.  The games have been played in a pretty good spirit and there have not been any of the disciplinary problems we encountered a couple of years ago.

I believe the Kent League is likely to be expanded a bit next season, so we shall look forward to the new season and hopefully a few better results!
