Cast your mind back to Wembley, 1973 — England v Poland. A night when Jan Tomaszewski produced a goalkeeping display for the ages.

Now cast your mind forward to a March 2026, this time not Wembley, but at Woodnesborough where we witnessed something similar by the home team keeper.

BayCity started on the front foot and put the home side under immediate pressure. The ball was kept well, and players passed and moved creating space for one another. The pressure soon told. A neat passing move resulted in Colin finding Les on the edge of the box, and Les duly dispatched the ball into the corner of the net — no chance for our Tomaszewski clone on this occasion.

The home team mounted sporadic attacks, but Nigel at the back ensured nothing came of them, reading the game well and snuffing out danger early. More good play brought about the second goal. After an exchange of passes between Chris and Rob, Rob played a through ball into Les, who once again made no mistake with a composed finish.

Peter in goal had little to do for long spells of the first half but showed great agility and concentration just before half-time. A well-worked free kick found its way through a crowd of players, yet Peter reacted sharply, getting down low to his left to make a crucial save — made all the more impressive by the bodies in front of him.

2–0 at the break, and thoroughly deserved.

The second half saw a reshuffle, with Nobby coming on, Les dropping into midfield, and Colin taking Nigel’s place at the back. BayCity remained disciplined and organised. Numerous chances continued to come — only for the home teams inspired goalkeeper to deny us time and again!

Game management in the closing stages was excellent. The ball was retained when needed, pressure was absorbed, and the clean sheet was well deserved.

Full-time: 2–0.

A composed, controlled team performance — and a good result. On another night, without the home team keeper calling on his inner Tomaszewski, the score could have been double figures. Still, a 2-0 victory, a clean sheet and the first ever league win for BayCity Over 65s in their third ever league game is not to be sniffed at. Onwards and upwards old boys!
