After last seasons cage rumble and much debated draw with Woodchurch, this was a very much a must win match for BayCity to seal our position in the top half of the league.
We knew it was going to be a tough match and we had to take into account the unusual pitch as well as Woodchurch’s style of attacking football, so a change of formation was the order of the night!
BayCity got off to a good start with some good attacking football and it wasn’t long before Phil was testing the keeper and hitting the post. Woodchurch soon tightened up their game but BayCity had them on the back foot with lots of pressure which continued for a good ten minutes.
Woodchurch then got a lucky break and found an opening about fifteen yards out and fired in a powerful shot that left Matt with no chance down to his left. Within a minute of Woodchurch scoring, BayCity were level with Ada putting the ball through to Ian who had lost his marker which allowed him time to control the ball and slot it past the keeper.
Half time 1 -1
The second half saw BayCity Coming out strong having made one substitution Steve for Phil. Although BayCity had their work cut out we kept them at bay and continued to push them back. BayCity were then awarded a free-kick in the home team’s half which set up Ada to fire home a sublime shot that left the keeper standing.
Steve then picked up an injury which saw Phil coming back on and Michael on for Ian.
However, it was Woodchurch who found another opening and bring the home team level. It wasn’t long before they hit the crossbar and forced some further good saves from Matt. With five minutes left to go BayCity were still piling on the pressure, which saw Dave firing in from long range and the ball dipping at the last second through the keeper’s hand.
With only minutes to go BayCity held possession of the ball well which gave us a well deserved win in a hard fought match; this win took us back to second place in the league.
All credit to Paul and Ada for their sturdy defensive play tonight which kept the home team pinned back for much of the game. Also to Matt who pulled off some great saves to keep us in the game.
A big thank you also goes to the ref Darren Madden who is a newly appointed walking football referee. He controlled the game extremely well with fair decisions throughout the match.
Overall, the match was played in good spirits and great sportsmanship.
