Flaming June has transformed it to extremely soggy July as the newly reformed BayCity Strollers 50s began their league campaign against opponents that we have never previously encountered.
So in to the unknown with a team that hadn’t played together before as the heavens opened.
We started like we had been doing this for some time with some controlled possession and pushing Woodchurch back at every opportunity, it was quite a start and Peter and Ada put us 2 up after 10 minutes, thoroughly deserved with some impressive teamwork.
The away team seemed to realise that they had better up their game if they wanted to get anything out of their visit to Baypoint and gradually started to put us under pressure, the wet conditions were a nightmare with the ball skidding on and Lawrence used all his experience to keep a clean sheet before the break.
Despite our strong first half performance the deficit was quickly cut as we failed to defend a quickly taken free kick, now was the time for the goal of the game with a side foot special from Dave sailed in to the top corner with the away keeper having absolutely no chance. With the game seemingly in the bag we made it interesting as we conceded our second of the day although ultimately holding out for the 3 points.
The whole squad played their part in a very encouraging victory, notable performances from Dave, Patrick and Ada with the ever dependable Lawrence ensuring victory.
It was a pleasure to welcome Woodchurch today as they played the game in the right spirit and we look forward to playing them again over both age groups, the game was yet again superbly refereed by Chris Smith.
So a great start with Dave especially happy with our attitude, the team/squad ethic was very strong and will bode us well in the coming months as we continue our adventure.
