Football can be a frustrating and, as Jimmy Greavesfamously said, “it’s a funny old game.” Tonight’s Over 65s away fixture against Woodnesborough Reds proved exactly that.

In tight matches, the outcome is often decided by a moment of magic or a single mistake. Unfortunately for BayCity, it was the latter that proved decisive.

BayCity started brightly, testing the home keeper within the opening minute. A great through ball from George found Les, who turned his defender well and got a shot on target. For much of the first half, BayCity were on top, creating several good opportunities and keeping the pressure on, but were unable to find the breakthrough.

The home side had chances of their own, though far fewer, and whenever they threatened, Peter was equal to it — ensuring the scores remained level.

The decisive moment came from a BayCity kick-in that left us exposed at the back. Woodnesborough capitalised with a quick breakaway goal; very frustrating and very much against the run of play.

Half-time: 1–0 to Woodnesborough Reds

Changes were made at the break, with Rob coming off, Nobby moving up front, and Les dropping into midfield.

The second half saw the home side apply more pressure, but Peter — our deserved Man of the Match — continued to make key saves to keep BayCity in contention. The team defended resolutely throughout, showing strong spirit, organisation, and togetherness.

Further changes saw Nigel replace George, Will come on for Chris, and Gordon for Colin.

As the game entered its closing stages, both teams were on three running offences, adding tension to an already tight contest. Despite pushing for an equaliser, it just wasn’t our night.

On the balance of play and chances created, this was not a game BayCity deserved to lose — but, as they say, it’s a funny old game.

Thanks to the whole squad for playing in the right spirit — with smiles, encouragement, and real togetherness throughout.

Onwards and upwards.
