29 January 2018: BayCity Strollers 0 v Herne Bay 1

Our squad warmed up at BayPoint on the normal Monday evening session, before our “away” match versus Herne Bay. The latter did not have hot-shot Neil Davey in the squad (fortunately!), but otherwise they had a pretty full team of ex-semi pros.

You might remember our home match v Herne Bay last October was a pretty convincing convincing defeat for us, but this was a different game……… Playing our best football so far in the league we matched Herne Bay and largely frustrated their efforts.

In the first half especially we had a number of shots which were largely just off target and the rebounds never fell for us.

Herne Bay however took the lead with a disputed close range shot at the gloomy end, which those in red were convinced was inside the area. The ref however was unsighted on the half way line and gave the goal.

In the second half our defence continued their fine form and Lawrence was his usual secure last line. We kept our shape well to the end, finished strongly, and had some half chances to score. The ball however never quite ran for us.

So in the end, it was a defeat ….. but we showed we can match the best team in the league. Herne Bay admitted that this was the toughest match they had had, so far.
