A nice sunny September morning greeted both teams for their first game of the  season. A new look BayCity welcomed 4 debutants. BayCity had a good start knocking the ball around with some quick passes testing the keeper early doors. Then a free kick wasn’t closed down quick enough and the visitors took the lead. Again BayCity pressed but no rewards against a resolute defence. Then 3 running offences from the same player (leave you to guess that one) in a couple of minutes, gave the visitors a penalty which they stuck away. Nathan subbed on for Kingy for his debut. Then literally on the half-time mark BayCity were awarded a penalty due to accumulated running offences by Herne Bay. Debutant Tony Ryan hit the top corner for his first goal for the club.

Half-time 1-2.

Second half started the same way as the first did with BayCity pushing forward. Herne Bay’s continuous complaints to the referee appeared to pay off as every contested ball ended in a free kick. However, a superb solo goal from the visitors midfielder made it 1-3. This was followed by a soft goal that summed up our luck, 1-4 to Herne Bay . Their 5th goal came from what appeared to be a player running but for some reason the referee did not award a free kick 1-5. Last 10 minutes it was all BayCity but we just couldn’t score. While the overall result was disappointing, the effort and work rate were there. There’s a lot to work on and learn, but we can be optimistic about the season ahead. Onwards and upwards.

Ethelbert away next on Monday 6th October
