Well what a performance, this sort of score has been on the cards for some time and unfortunately for Woodchurch they were on the wrong end. Storm Bert had nothing on us as we blew our opponents away.
Woodchurch are sitting proudly at the top of the league and we knew that if we wanted to get anything out of the game we would need to be on it from the start, we were, having to defend resolutely as the away team made a confident start as their league position suggested they should. Lawrence was at his best during this period making a couple of assured saves, one long range effort did beat him smacking off the post with the rebound effort sailing over our cross bar. After this we gradually started to take command of possession as our passing game got going and we went on the front foot. As we stepped up the pressure the opener was never far away, Les kept up his fine form as he finished off a great team move. Woodchurch couldn’t get out as we continued to dominate and Colin got his first of the season as he closed down and nicked the ball away from the defender expertly flicking the ball in to the corner of the goal. We were now in a dominant mood as we kept making chances, just before half time Les got his second and our 3rd. So after a fairly even beginning we sat on a comfortable lead.
As the second half got underway we were in no mood to let Woodchurch back in to the game as we blunted any attacks and went seeking further goals; Kevin duly obliged with the fourth and Les completed his hat trick to make it five. We did take our foot off a little bit as we conceded a couple of goals, the first being a penalty due to the dreaded four running offences, it must be a unique thing to walking football as the offender was penalised before getting a touch of the ball, suffice to say it would be apPAULing of me to name names. With our funny five minutes out of the way we regained our composure, the poor away keeper was now appearing to lose the will to live as more efforts rained down on his goal, surprisingly our only addition came as we were awarded a penalty which George confidently dispatched.
This was by far and away our best performance of the season and third victory in succession, everyone played their part, Les, Kevin, Colin and Rob all assisted goals, while our midfield gave us control ably marshalled by Grant, Rob and Colin. Les never gave his marker any rest as his constant movement gave us the space to exploit. Our communication was also spot on as we covered on the odd occasion that we lost our shape. All our squad contributed and Rich made his league debut. All round a very satisfying morning of football as we retired to the bar for refreshments and a warm glow took over, of course that could have been the beer.
Thanks as usual to Chris Smith for another excellent refereeing performance.
