So to our last home game of the season and the visit of Herne Bay to Baypoint.

Always closely contested games and this was to be no different .

As it was likely that Herne Bay would have the majority of possession in the game, the pre match team talk revolved around being disciplined when BayCity didn’t have the ball. It has to be said for the majority of the match BayCity did just that, however, football is a game of small margins and tonight we just came up short.

From the first whistle, Herne Bay looked to assert their control, enjoying the majority of possession and probing patiently for openings. Their neat passing and composure on the ball made them difficult to dispossess, and it wasn’t long before they found the breakthrough. A free kick on the edge of the BayCity box resulted in a quick exchange of passes and a clever finish to make it 1-0 to Herne Bay.

BayCity, however, didn’t let their heads drop and continued to create shooting opportunities on goal, with Les and Kevin going close. In fact as the half progressed BayCity were arguably the better side and it was only the Herne Bay goalkeeper keeping them in the game. Finally BayCity were rewarded for their attacking play with a well taken goal from distance by Les.

1-1 at halftime.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Herne Bay dictating the tempo but finding it difficult to break down BayCity’s compact defensive display. Despite limited possession, BayCity carved out several chances on the counter and arguably still looked the more dangerous in front of goal. But it was Herne Bay who ultimately found the winner—a moment of individual quality ten minutes from time sealed the victory. A clever turn and shot by the Herne Bay player left Lawrence with no chance.

Herne Bay had the opportunity to increase their lead after the fourth running offence by BayCity; fortunately the penalty hit the bar. I will add at this point that Lawrence claimed he got his fingertips to the ball, however VAR is still yet to confirm this!

Whilst the final score was 2-1 to Herne Bay, all the BayCity players can be proud of their performance on the night. On another day the result could have been different, as on the balance of chances created, not possession, a draw would have been a fair result. Unfortunately the football gods were not smiling on BayCity tonight.

Well done Herne Bay and thank you to Chris Smith for refereeing the game.

Also thank you to those who turned up to support the team, Tony Old, Simon, Nick and Mark.

Games are coming quick and fast with our next game away to Ethelbert Wanderers in 3 days time. Onwards and upwards to the end of the season!
