An evenly matched contest got underway at Baypoint, with both sides showing good touch and intent from the outset. Canterbury struck first after ten minutes, capitalising on a well-worked move to edge ahead 1–0.
BayCity Strollers responded positively and grew into the game. Their pressure paid off when Dave Beale won back possession high up the pitch and showed great composure to beat the keeper at the near post, bringing the score level at 1–1.
The Strollers continued to create chances, with Phil Sabin-Dawson going close on a number of occasions, while Nick Wallace impressed in the striker’s role, holding the ball up well and linking play effectively. The teams went into the break evenly poised at 1–1.
The second half remained tightly contested, with little to separate the two sides. Canterbury regained the lead from a free kick, rifling the ball into the corner and leaving Strollers goalkeeper Matt Caston with no chance.
Midway through the half, BayCity were handed an opportunity to draw level when they were awarded a penalty following an accumulation of running offences by Canterbury, unfortunately, Beale was unable to convert.
BayCity Strollers pressed hard in the closing stages, committing players forward and applying sustained pressure in search of an equaliser, with returning Paul Price playing further upfield. Despite their efforts, Canterbury held firm to see out the match.
There was a special moment in the 2nd half as Jason Wardle returned to action for the final ten minutes, marking his comeback from a long-term Achilles injury.
Thanks to Darren Madden for officiating and for BayCity supporters who turned out in good numbers.
