On an extremely windy Sunday Morning BayCity took on Margate for the first time in the over 50’s league. BayCity were also looking to move to the top of the league for the Christmas break.
It was another good start by BayCity with Phil yet again testing the opponent’s woodwork and keeper from the off. Within two minutes BayCity were one nil up with a nice through ball to Steve who casually put the ball past the keeper. However, it wasn’t long before Margate were level, after BayCity left their defences open which enabled Margate to put a striking ball from long range into the top right-hand corner.
BayCity continued to pressure Margate with Phil testing their keeper again. It was then the turn of Steve’s brother Paul to get on the score sheet from a nice quick move on the edge of the opponent’s box. With some good end to end football being played, both keepers were being tested but more so the Margate keeper with both Phil and Steve coming close on several occasions.
Half time 2 – 1 to BayCity.
With the second half underway BayCity continued their dominance which saw Phil getting on the score sheet with a well taken rebound that had come off the away teams keeper. With BayCity 3 – 1 up the home team seemed to lose their composure and Margate were upping their game. BayCity were failing to control the game and it was our lack of discipline for running offences which once again saw the away side getting back into contention from the penalty spot.
Luckily for BayCity Steve was on hand to put the home team further in front with another well taken goal. Having cleared the slate for running offences BayCity found themselves on another four running offences with only a minute to go. Margate stepped up once again making the final score
4 – 3 to BayCity.
A win and top spot for BayCity but further lessons to be learnt with our running discipline as we go into the Christmas break.
