Our final league match of the year saw us defeated yet again as we conceded four goals in the first half, Margate certainly deserved their victory with some clinical finishing, the fifth goal in the second half was an absolute belter giving Peter no chance of saving. On balance, we probably had just as many chances to score but just couldn’t convert. A lot of our approach play was excellent but we were unable to find that vital final ingredient of putting the ball in the back of the net. The first three goals against were all from the result of conceding free kicks around our goal area, on each occasion an opening was manoeuvred, again Peter was given little chance of saving as well placed shots put us behind. Our own free kicks were ineffectual, something we need to work on on a Monday night, losing the 60s hour has no doubt put us back as we don’t get the chance to practice as a team, we can though look to improve as individuals by focusing on better habits and communication.
The second half was better, again we had good possession in our opponents half making chances, Chris and Les both had efforts well saved and Les again came close as his deflected shot went narrowly wide. As mentioned earlier a thumping effort made it five, we did manage at long last to get a goal of our own as Les scored from the spot.
One thing we can take some pride in is that we never stopped trying, our speed was also good and this we need to maintain moving forward, unfortunately though as the goals rattled in especially in the first period our confidence was severely dented; all of the good work from the previous performance was blown away in 20 minutes.
Our return to action in the new year sees us up against the runaway leaders Woodnesborough Reds, a most difficult task, however there is no reason why we can’t get something out of the game. I still believe in our squad and if we focus and make those small adjustments we are a match for anyone.
Thanks to Chris Smith for refereeing, along with Rob, Lawrence, Gordon and Ralph for their unwavering support.
